Love for the fight
The Soul Assasin’s love for the game has lasted a long time. His professional career has spanned 14 years. Ross has entered the ring 59 times winning 45 bouts. The world has supplied him with plenty to paint with. He’s fought the best including Saenchai.
“I've always fought because I loved to do it,” Ross said. “And I don't think there'll be a time that I don't love to do it.”
His love for the sport has had him do the impossible. That’s why he has been at the forefront of popularizing the sport in America.
Muay Thai Pioneer
Muay Thai in the states is still niche, and still in its infancy. Thanks to promotions like Triumphant, the sport is growing.
“You know, I feel like we're all pioneers in the sport because it is so new here in the states and under the radar,” Ross said. "Each and every one of us plays a role. No matter how big or small.”
The athletes, the coaches, the promoters, and the fans all play a part in building the Muay Thai community. The light shines on some more than others. It is because of their triumphs, their failures, and their stories. Kevin Ross’ story of redemption through Muay Thai is as familiar as it is inspiring. It has pushed people to get into the ring.
“There are certain individuals you can say are the ones pushing it or made big strides. But I've never seen myself as you know, more valuable than anybody else. I happened to be more well known,” Ross said.
The Soul Assasin has appeared on Joe Rogan and the big screen. He’s commentated fights, cornered, authored books, and helped teach countless people how to improve.
Ross is well known because he’s grown in and with the community.
Aging With The Fight
The Pioneer has matured with the sport. There is always a lingering question for fighters though… when to stop. There is a biological clock for a Nak Muay. It’s something that Ross has considered overtime.
It comes to three criteria for him. Is there still love? Is there still a physical ability? Is there a desire to deal with the training?
“I think what happens a lot of times with fighters as they age is they never lose the love of fighting,” Ross said. “But they either can't or don't want to prepare the way they need to. That's where you see them decline rather rapidly.”
Ross has stayed consistent in all three. He is training regularly out of Boxing Works in Hermosa Beach. His love for the sport has maintained. Because he keeps his body in tip top condition he can still and wants to deal with the hard training.
The legacy of the fight
What matters for this fight isn’t just love. It’s a moment in history. American Muay Thai is coming together for this bout.
The world has been locked down but now there is movement and growth. Triumphant and Muay Thai Addict are bursting out with this card.
“This is one of those moments that everything's kind of coming together,” Ross said. “One of those landmark moments that will stand out.”
